Dead is thirteen-month-old Arian Gill while her aunt Ashley Norton, 12, a secondary school student is in a critical condition at the GPH after she was shot twice to her leg and thigh. Arian was shot once to her left shoulder and died in the hands of her grandmother Shelly Norton.

Angoy fled after the shooting.

The child had lived with her grandmother, who was the intended target, her mother and two aunts in the bottom flat of a Lot 38 Eastville, East Coast Demerara (ECD) house.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that the shooter and the elder Norton were in a relationship but separated about a month ago. According to Blanhum, Angoy, 35, is on the run and police are expected to issue a wanted bulletin for him. He disclosed that Norton, who owns a shop in the interior, had obtained a restraining order against the man.

He said that despite this, yesterday, Angoy went to the Eastville house and discharged three rounds at a southern window. At the time of the shooting, the two children were in the sitting room area while Norton was in her bedroom. The bullets struck the children.

Norton, mother of Ashley and grandmother of Arian broke down in tears yesterday as she spoke with Stabroek News. Her blouse was stained with blood. The woman recounted that she was at home with Arian and Ashley and both the doors of the house were tightly secured. She said that she was resting in her bedroom while Arian and Ashley were in the living room watching television when she heard several gunshots.

“I jump up and see Ashley running with Arian in she hand heading to the back of the house and I see Marc at the window with the gun in he hand just shooting,” the woman recounted. She said that the shooter was unable to enter the house since it is secured with grills. Norton recalled that Angoy pushed his hands through a window and fired his gun. “I run in the bathroom to hide and I see Ashley foot bleeding and when I check (Arian) I see she get shoot in she back and like she did get black out,” Norton recounted.

She immediately rushed out of the house and called the police. Angoy, meantime, escaped in a waiting blue car, she said.

A woman who resides in the top flat of the house said that she was at home with her family at the time of the incident but only realized something was amiss after she heard several gunshots. The woman said at first she thought it was squibs but after making checks, she learnt of what transpired. “When I run downstairs, I hear Shelly telling me, ‘baby get shoot, baby get shoot’ and she had she in her hand,” the woman related.

Meantime, Norton related that she shared a relationship with Angoy for over three years but as it was one that was filled with abuse of all forms, she decided to separate from him over a month ago. “I decide to quit the relationship like five weeks ago and just live with my children because I know they themselves (her children) did scared to live there alone,” Norton said.

“I had a shop that was jointly owned between the two of us in the interior and only recently I hand over everything to him (Angoy) hoping that he would change and move on,”

Norton had obtained a restraining order against Angoy and related that she returned from the interior a few days ago as they currently are engaged in a court matter which was expected to be called again on Thursday. “He always breach it (the restraining order) since the inception. Only on October 7, when I went in the interior, he tell me he gon hurt the closest thing for me and I made a report at the police station,” a weeping Norton recounted.

In addition, she said, on the same day, Angoy came to her while she was at the riverside and he was armed with a cutlass and threatened to chop and kill her and told her that she will live with pain for the rest of her life. She recalled that on Thursday, the shooter called Ashley on the phone about seven times and threatened to kill her. Ashley is Norton’s last child.

According to Norton, she will live with regrets for the rest of her life knowing that a life was taken because she failed to act quickly regarding the abusive relationship. She also expressed fear for her life.
