Fyrish commissions basketball court and pavilion

President David Granger on Sunday encouraged community partnership during the commissioning ceremony of the Fyrish, Corentyne basketball court and pavilion.

According to a Ministry of the Presidency press release, Granger stressed the importance of community involvement to the residents of Fyrish, Corentyne.

“I am afraid of embarking on governmental intervention in communities unless the communities see themselves as partners and not as beneficiaries of handouts.” Granger said, “We know central government must be involved but if we are to build the spirit of community development, you the residents must become involved.”

The basketball court was procured in 2010, however the pavilion was constructed under the President’s Youth Choice Initiative.

Fencing for the project was completed under the Culture Ministry’s $1m community ground enhancement project with the basketball equipment being donated by the National Sports Commission.

Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry was also in attendance, the release said.
