Caricom Secretary visits Brazil on strengthening mission

On October 26, Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque made an official visit to Brazil at the request of Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Luiz Vieira.

According to a Caricom press release, the visit was aimed at strengthening relations between Caricom and Brazil via the maintenance of dialogue, review of the technical cooperation processes and opening the path for a high level meeting.

The visit included a meeting with the Foreign Minister and senior officials at the ministry, Itamaraty, the Director of the Brazilian Agency for technical cooperation and the President of EMBRAPA, the agricultural institute. LaRocque also participated in a round-table discussion with students at the Rio Branco Institute diplomatic school.

Additionally, the Secretary General visited with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of Caricom member states in Brasilia.

The Brazilian Government has recently completed the internal processes to become a non-borrowing member of the Caribbean Development Bank, the release said.
