MARAD donates life jackets

As part of its ongoing life-jacket distribution campaign, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, recently donated 96 children’s life jackets to the Malali Primary School in Region Ten. According to a press release from the Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA), Regional Chair-man Renis Morian accepted the donation from MARAD’s Public Relations Officer Akosua McPherson, who emphasised that the objective was to ensure the continued safety of children plying the country’s waterways.

Muritaro Primary School also benefited from an additional 12 adult life jackets, supplementing a previous donation. Receiving the jackets on behalf of the school, teacher, Sharmin Grey expressed appreciation for the necessary and timely aid. Other primary schools in the Region 10 that have been assisted by the MARAD campaign are Kartabo, Makouria, Holy Name and Itaballi. Institutions in Region One will soon be beneficiaries of the campaign.

Additionally a number of volley balls and nets were handed over by President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation John Flores, who is Commander of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and a Consultant at MARAD. This fulfilled a previous request made to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs. Noting that similar donations were made in other areas such as Buxton and Plaisance, Flores announced his plan to bring the game up to federation level in the rural communities.

For his part Regional Chairman Renis Morian expressed his desire to see the further growth and progress of sports in the entire Region 10 area, “I am thinking about Kwakwani, Rockstone, River’s View, Ituni… Over the past few years there is a resurrection of sports in Region 10 and with support from such organisations as yours… we can take sports in Region 10 to the next level.”
