Man dies after struck by car on Duncan Street

An unidentified man died at the Georgetown Hospital last evening shortly after he was hit by a vehicle driven by a young attorney-at-law as he was attempting to cross Duncan Street.

Stabroek News was told that the man sustained serious head injuries which caused massive bleeding. Despite the efforts of the doctors and the emergency room staff he died.

Persons at the hospital said that it was the attorney who took the injured man to the hospital in her car around 18:50 hours. At the time the man was unconscious.

One woman who was there at the time related that the young woman was hysterical and between sobs was heard pleading for the man to be out of danger.

Stabroek News was told that the attorney recounted to the police that at the time of the accident the man who was wearing earphones walked into the path of the vehicle and was struck down. From all indications the man was distracted by whatever he was listening to.

The woman after giving a statement at the police outpost at the hospital was later escorted to the police station.

A hospital official said that by the time the man arrived at the hospital his head was already badly swollen and he was bleeding through his nose.

Investigations are being conducted.

The police today issued the following press release on the matter:

The Police Traffic Department of ‘A’ Division are investigating a fatal accident which occurred about 18:30hrs on Tuesday November 10,2015 on Duncan Street , Campbellville Public Road ,involving Motor car PRR 8181 driven by Keshia Chase and Pedestrian Julian Leitch, 47yrs of lot ‘C’ Enachu Street, Bel Air Park .

Enquiries disclosed from the driver of the car that she was proceeding east at a normal rate of speed when she suddenly saw the pedestrian on the centre of the road in front of her vehicle but because of the closeness, he was struck down . He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died at 20:45 hrs whilst receiving treatment. The body is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
