Homeowner, bandit hospitalised after bloody NA home invasion

Supermarket owner Nicholas Harrinandan is now hospitalised after fighting off three men who invaded his Tucberg, New Amsterdam home early yesterday morning.

Harrinandan, 38, was chopped about his body during the attack and is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

He, however, was not only one wounded in the confrontation, during which he armed himself with a cutlass and faced off with the home invaders, who were armed with a shotgun and a cutlass. Police say one of the bandits, whom they have identified as Brian Dhanphat, 26, of Smythfield, New Amsterdam, was also wounded and he is now a patient under guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he too is nursing chop wounds.

According to a police statement, the attack occurred around 1:20 am, when the three men entered Harrinandan’s home. At the time the homeowner was on his verandah.

After being alerted to the presence of the intruders in his home, Harrinandan armed himself with a cutlass and entered his living room, where he confronted the men. During the fracas, he dealt several chops to one of the bandits but he was also injured, police said.

Stabroek News was told that during the scuffle between Harrinandan and the bandits, his wife was roused and found her husband fighting with two men.

She then picked up objects from the living room and started to pelt the bandits in an effort to chase them. The two bandits subsequently fled, leaving their wounded accomplice and their shotgun behind.

Dhanphat was found trapped behind a wall divider, where he was bleeding profusely. Sources told Stabroek News that Dhanphat was chopped on his legs, arms and face. He underwent surgery yesterday at the New Amsterdam Hospital for his wounds.
