Mazaruni miner jailed for 18 months over theft of quicksilver, other items

A Mazaruni miner was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in prison by a city court after he admitted to stealing a quantity of quick silver, a gas bottle, $1,000 and a cellphone.

Troy Williams, 28, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny.

It was alleged that on November 3, at Three Miles, Karrau Backdam, Mazaruni River, Williams stole two pounds of quick silver, $40,000, one ounce, three pennyweights of raw gold, a Nokia cellphone and a torchlight.

The total value of the cash and items, property of Havloc Henry, was said to amount to $349,000.

While Williams pleaded guilty to the charge, he told the court that the only things he took were the quick silver, a gas bottle, a cellphone and $1,000.

According to the prosecutor, on the day the items went missing, Henry had secured them in his car and left for work.

When he returned sometime later, he found that the locks to the vehicle had been broken and the items removed. When police later apprehended Williams, he reportedly admitted to taking the items but refused to provide the ranks with a written statement.

Henry’s phone was found when a search was carried out on Williams’ person and the defendant later led the police to recover the quicksilver.

Williams was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Magistrate Latchman who stated that she’d given her ruling based on the prevalence of the offence and the need to prohibit others from committing such acts.
