Bus driver shot in jaw on Sheriff St

Police are investigating the shooting of a minibus driver yesterday by a passenger at the corner of David and Sherriff streets, Kitty in the early evening.

Stabroek News understands that Devon Sears of Bent Street, was working his usual Kitty/Campbellville route when he made a stop. As passengers were exiting the bus, one of them shot him, hitting him in the jaw.

According to a police statement the shooting occurred at 18:50 hrs. This newspaper was told by an eyewitness that as soon as the gunshot went off persons scattered from the scene including the perpetrator.

One eyewitness told Stabroek News that the shooter was waiting in the bus the entire time and appeared to have been targeting Sears.

Speaking to Stabroek News at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was rushed by another bus driver, Sears’ mother said that she was called to the hospital, but was not told of her son’s condition.

She said that she assumed it was a car accident and was shocked to learn that her son was going into surgery after arriving at the hospital.

Sears was unable to speak but was alert according to family members.
