Miners on ganja trafficking charges

Two Mahdia residents were both remanded to prison yesterday on charges that they had marijuana for trafficking.

It is alleged that Linden Baveghems, 21, a pork knocker of Mahdia, on November 24th, in the Essequibo District, had 31 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.

It is also alleged that Franklyn Ford, 22, a gold miner of Mahdia, on the same day, in the Potaro District, had 63 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.

Baveghems and Ford, who were charged separately, each pleaded not guilty.

Based on the seriousness of the charges, the penalty attached and the admission by the two men to ownership of the drugs when they were apprehended, the prosecution objected to bail.

Baveghems and Ford were subsequently remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore. They are expected to be back in court on December 7th.
