Suspect charged in fatal stabbing of Corentyne miner

A suspect was yesterday charged and remanded to prison over the alleged murder of miner Santee Solomon, who was fatally stabbed almost two weeks ago.

It is alleged that Samuel Anthony Gouveia, 22, of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, on November 23rd at Puruni Landing, near the Cuyuni River, murdered Solomon.

Gouveia, a gold miner, was not required to plead to the charge, which was read to him in a Georgetown court by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Gouveia, was subsequently, remanded to prison and his case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for a hearing on December 30th.

Solomon, 35, of Line Path, Skeldon and Nurney, Corentyne was working in the interior with Bacchus International Gold Mines when he was fatally attacked.

It was initially reported that he was attacked by two men.

His common-law wife, Alisha Ross, had said that after the attack, the wounded Solomon was airlifted to the Bartica Public Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

A post-mortem examination performed by Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh found that Solomon died from a punctured lung.
