It’s time for Guyana to give back by accepting some refugees

Dear Editor,

Who is my neighbour and are the Syrian refugees my neighbour? I believe they are, and I also believe that as a country we have a moral imperative to accept some of them.

We need to open our hearts and welcome in people who are fleeing extraordinarily difficult situations. Just as many countries have opened their hearts and accepted thousands of Guyanese, it’s time for Guyana to give back by accepting some refugees.

We must not ask, if we try to help the refugees, what would happen to us? Like the Good Samaritan, we must ask, if we don’t try to help them, what would happen to them?

Yours faithfully,

Anthony Pantlitz
