Phones stolen on plane: 5 arrested

(Trinidad Express) – Five people have been arrested and are expected to be charged for stealing cellphones from the cargo in a plane that stopped off in this country on its way to Guyana.

Reports are a Caribbean Airlines flight in transit from New York to Guyana arrived at Piarco International Airport last Wednesday to offload cargo.

On Thursday, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service officers received a report from authorities in Guyana that nine cellphones were missing, however.

Among the missing phones were the high-end Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhones.

Sgt Joseph of the Arouca Criminal Investigation Department led a team of detectives to the airport.

Four male employees of Swissport, aged 23 to 26, and a 44-year-old female, who is said to be a lecturer at the Trinidad and Tobago Training Academy, were arrested as a result of those investigations.

Seven of the stolen cellphones were recovered.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a sixth suspect.

Investigations are continuing.
