Courtland man tied up, tortured wife – court hears

A Courtland Village construction worker, who allegedly tied up his reputed wife overnight, burnt her with cigarettes and a knife and attempted to burn the bed she was tied to, has been placed on $200,000 bail after he was charged with unlawful wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Nicosi Henry appeared in the Albion Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the charges, on December 26, Henry unlawfully wounded Kiana Cort and on the same day also inflicted grievous bodily harm.

Cort, who is a pharmacy assistant, has been a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of the accused, reports said, and would move out of their Courtland, Corentyne home and spend time at her mother.

On December 26, Cort was asleep when she was stabbed in her legs with a knife allegedly by Henry. According to the reports, the accused used a towel to gag Cort to prevent her from raising an alarm and also tied her up. During that process he allegedly threatened to kill her, doused the bed with kerosene oil, set it on fire and escaped. However, the fire went out.

Earlier, the accused also burnt Cort with a cigarette and a heated knife. According to reports, Cort remained tied up and the accused returned during the night and stood guard over her until 5 am the next day, when he untied her.

The injured woman managed to escape to safety around 7 am and made a report at the Albion Police Station. She was later referred to the Port Mourant Hospital where she received treatment for her injuries.

Henry is schedule to make another appearance in court tomorrow.
