Plaisance mother dies two months after baby passed away

A young Plaisance husband has been plunged into further grief after his wife passed away at the Georgetown Public Hospital, a mere two months after they lost their five-month-old baby to bronchopneumonia.

Travis Patterson is grieving the loss of both his young wife and their infant child. The infant was hospitalized at the public hospital after she was apparently misdiagnosed for Chikungunya instead of being treated for bronchopneumonia.

The infant, Eimi Patterson, had developed a cough and was taken to the hospital and was allegedly treated for the mosquito-borne virus and sent home. A few days later, she started having laboured breathing and slipped into a coma. She died a few days later.

The young mother, Cindy Best, who had called on the hospital to improve its health care system died earlier this week. The cause of her death is unknown at this moment and a post mortem is expected to be performed tomorrow.

Yesterday when Stabroek News visited her home at Graham Street, Plaisance, the young woman’s mother declined to speak about her daughter’s death. “Forget about it,” she said.

Best had stated that the less mistakes the doctors at the hospital make, the better it is for everyone. She said her child’s death was a great mistake and if they had found out what was wrong with the baby from the inception they could have saved her life.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Michael Khan had launched an investigation into the infant’s death; the result of that investigation is still unknown.
