Bystander shot by cop at Nabaclis during robbery probe

A bystander was accidentally shot by the police yesterday at Nabaclis while they were investigating a robbery that occurred on Monday at Haslington, another East Coast Demerara village.

In a statement yesterday, the police said that on January 26, 2015, three men were attacked and robbed of their cell phones and jewellery by two men armed with handguns at Haslington, ECD.

In conducting investigations into the matter, at about 1200h. yesterday, the police said that information was received that one of the suspects was in a house at Nabaclis Middle Walk, ECD.

“The police responded to the information and during efforts to arrest him, the suspect attacked a rank with a knife causing the police to resort to the use of force.

“A round was discharged by an armed rank which, however, accidentally hit a bystander to his left foot. He was identified as Sherwin Jack, 37 years, of Nabaclis”, the police said.

The police said that efforts to take Jack, who they say is reported to be mentally unstable, for medical treatment were unsuccessful as he refused the assistance of the police. The police said that this was compounded by a crowd of residents who had gathered and further prevented the police from aiding Jack.

The police said that the residents took the injured Jack to the Enmore Clinic from where he was transported by an ambulance to the GPHC. He has been admitted for medical attention.

Meanwhile, the police said that the suspect has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
