Nismes man jailed for five months for wounding woman

A West Bank Demerara man was yesterday sentenced to five months in jail after he was found guilty of wounding a woman.

Leroy Johnson, 57, of Nismes, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts about one month ago and pleaded not guilty to the charge that on February 6, at Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, he unlawfully wounded Pamela Gordon.

Following the completion of his trial by Magistrate Annette Singh, John was sentenced. He was also placed on a bond to keep the peace for a year.

When Johnson previously appeared in court, his explanation was that he shared a long relationship with Gordon as a workmate and he often helped her. He said that she had told him of certain plans she was making, which he felt were illegal and he scolded her and further threatened to take her story to the media, which upset her.

Johnson said the complainant then made a report against him but the police told her that they could not do anything about it, which resulted in her angrily pelting bottles at him. “She had a bottle in she hand and I just try fuh take away the bottle and she hand get cut and then she say how I chop she,” Johnson had stated.
