Taxi driver charged with abusing mother

A taxi driver was remanded to prison after he was accused of abusing his mother and could not find alternative lodgings while the case is in court.

Taitram Singh, 39, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, found himself before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court accused of cursing and threatening to beat his mother with a piece of wood. Prosecutor John Singh said the defendant was drinking in his hammock when the alleged abuse started. He said the man’s mother was hanging out clothes, when suddenly he began to curse her. Singh said the man proceeded to pick up a piece of wood and threatened to beat his mother. The scared woman managed to avoid the beating and made a report to the police and Singh was arrested and charged.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charges and when asked by Magistrate Zamilla Ally if he had any other place to go, he responded in the negative.

”He has to change his life. I can’t keep up with this; I am 64 years old,” his mother, who was present at his arraignment, said.

She told the court that Singh would get aggressive whenever he drinks and he has nowhere to go even though he said he would rent a place.

Singh was remanded and was to reappear in court yesterday.
