Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday remanded a gold miner to prison after he appeared before her accused of robbery under arms committed on two persons.
Twenty-year-old Nicko Layne of Lot 51 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to two counts of robbery under arms when he appeared at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court 3.
It is alleged that on May 6 at West Ruimveldt, being armed with a gun, Layne robbed Shafeek Mohammed of one smartphone and a quantity of cash, amounting to $65,300. It is also alleged that on June 12, at the same village, being armed with a scissors, he robbed Ivor Hartman of one cellphone and a quantity of cash, valued $30,400.
No facts were presented in court other than those stated in the charges.
The prosecution objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offences, their prevalence, the penalties attached and most importantly that a gun was allegedly used in the matter which involved Mohammed.
The court also heard that several other matters are under investigation at the Ruimveldt and Providence Police Stations and more charges are likely to be laid against the defendant.
Layne was unrepresented by counsel.
As a result, bail was refused and the matter was adjourned to June 29.
