Miner remanded over cocaine, ganja

A miner was yesterday remanded to prison on charges of possession of cocaine and cannabis for drug trafficking, allegedly found in his crotch and pocket.

Roy Dundas, 46, of Lot 64 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty when the two charges were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

It is alleged that on June 18 at Cuyuni River, he had in his possession 26 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He is also accused of having 90 grammes of cannabis in his possession, for the same purpose.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question, police on patrol duty stopped a speed boat which the defendant was in and he was seen acting in a suspicious manner. A search was conducted on his person and a bag was found in his crotch containing 38 small Ziploc bags with leaves, seeds and steams suspected to be cannabis. A further search was conducted and a green bag was found in his pocket containing some whitish substance suspected to be cocaine. He was told of the allegations and cautioned whereupon he replied “we could do something.”

Attorney Latchmie Rahamat made an application for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum to her client while noting he had no previous convictions or any pending matters. Rahamat told the court that she was instructed by Dundas that these charges were fraudulently made against him.

Dundas was refused bail. The matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for September 21.
