Driver offers compensation to couple injured in Lamaha St collision

William Nurse, 53, and Lisa Khedoo, 37, who were struck off a bicycle by a driver a week ago, both remain patients of Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Both Nurse and Khedoo said they have been offered compensation by the driver who hit them.

They were struck from the bicycle they were travelling on after the driver of a car, bearing licence plate PNN 9, lost control of the vehicle near East and Lamaha streets, in Georgetown, last Sunday morning.

Nurse sustained head and spinal injuries, while Khedoo sustained a broken right arm, a fractured jaw and spinal injuries as well.

The driver, who was taken into police custody after the accident was released from custody in less than a day and has been visiting them at the hospital regularly.

Nurse is admitted in the male medical ward of the hospital, while Khedoo is a patient in the female medical ward.

Speaking to Stabroek News from his hospital bed, Nurse said on Sunday morning he left home to take Khedoo to the GPH for medical attention since she was experiencing a high fever. However, he said as they were about to reach their destination, the car hit them from the back and pitched them into a nearby canal.

Nurse said his next memory was waking up in a hospital bed the following day.

Although his condition was improving, Nurse was dissatisfied that the driver had not been charged. According to him, the driver visited him at the hospital and attempted to settle the matter by offering him $800,000 compensation. He said too that the driver told him that if he needs anything while he is admitted at the hospital he should contact him.

However, Nurse said he would not accept the money.

Khedoo, on the other hand, said she too was offered compensation and she would accept it. “I will accept it yes because I never suffer like this in my whole life,” she stated.
