Feuding neighbours on assault charges

Two neighbours found themselves in court on Friday after threats allegedly escalated into violence.

The Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court heard that other neighbours had to intervene and stop a fight between Imran Khan and Deorani Singh, who were both arrested and charged.

They both pleaded not guilty to a total of seven charges between them.

Singh was accused of assaulting and using abusive language towards Khan on September 6th, while he was faced with five others charges stemming from the fight as well as the inciting altercation weeks before.

The charges against Khan state that on August 20th, at Martyrs Ville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, he used threatening and abusive language towards Singh. In addition, he is charged with used threatening and abusive language towards Singh on September 6th as well as with assaulting her so as to cause bodily harm on the same date.

According to the prosecution’s case, Khan and Singh weren’t on speaking terms due to a verbal altercation where Khan allegedly used abusive and threatening language towards the woman. On September 6th, police say Singh was in her yard when she saw Khan and an argument started. It is alleged that they both threatened each other and Khan subsequently confronted the woman and dealt several cuffs and kicks about her body. In response, Singh allegedly picked up a piece of wood and dealt Khan several lashes.

Neighbours intervened and stopped the fight and the matter was subsequently reported to the police, who arrested and charged the couple.

With no objections from the prosecution, Khan was placed on $100,000 bail, while Singh was placed on $55,000 bail. The matters will be heard again on September 29th.
