Visually impaired UG student receives laptop

A visually impaired Ceion Rollex, is the recipient of a new laptop amongst other equipment which were handed over to him by President David Granger to aid in his studies at the University of Guyana (UG).

The presentation was made on Monday to the 18-year-old, Sophia resident who is a first year student at the UG pursuing studies in communications. `Included in the package Rollox received was a printer, headphones, a DVD writer and flash drive.

Rollox lost his sight when he was 14 years old. However, through the support from the Guyana Institute for the Blind, he wrote the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams in which he was successful.

The student requested help from the president by way of letter, to acquire the laptop, which would enable him to use a special software with speech synthesisers as he pursues his degree.

While making the presentation, President Granger said that as a matter of policy, he is committed to supporting all forms of education. He said “we do not regard the loss of sight as an impediment but as an opportunity for you to fulfil your educational objectives by different means.”
