Brazilian held with gun confesses to 2 murders – police

A Brazilian man who was arrested on Wednesday with a loaded gun in his possession has confessed to committing two interior murders and according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, detectives are checking to see if he is linked to any other crimes committed in `F’ Division.

Blanhum told Stabroek News yesterday that ballistics tests are still being conducted on the unlicensed .38 revolver that the man had in his possession.

Police had said in a press release that the man was arrested at Mawasie Backdam, Mahdia and that he was wanted for questioning in the investigations of two murders that occurred at Konawaruk, Region 8 and Mawasie Backdam, Region 7. The murder victims were not named.

A source close to the investigation told Stabroek News that the man confessed that he murdered a fellow Brazilian between August 12 and 13 at Konawaruk. He told ranks that there was a fight during which the man discharged rounds at him. During the scuffle, the suspect said, the deceased fell to the ground and hit his head and later died. The suspect told detectives that he later fled with the man’s bike and his gun. A post-mortem examination had revealed that the victim died as a result of blunt trauma.

The second murder was that of Mahaica resident Devon Anderson in June last year. Investigations had revealed that Anderson and another man were involved in an argument during which he was shot and killed.
