Truck driver on $1M bail after denying causing death

A truck driver was yesterday placed on $1 million bail after he denied causing a woman’s death.

Wayne Lowe, 23, of Lot 76 Land of Canaan, was charged in a city court with driving his vehicle in a dangerous manner, resulting in the death of Delecia Gonsalves.

The accident occurred on September 26 at Haruni, Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Lowe was charged additionally with transporting persons in the tray of his truck without the required permission from authorities.

The accused, who appeared in court bandaged and with his arm in a sling, pleaded not guilty to causing the death of the deceased, and guilty to the latter charge of illegally carrying individuals in his vehicle.

Lowe, who had turned up to court without an attorney, had a bail application made on his behalf by attorney Dexter Todd by the request of Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Magistrate Latchman fined the defendant $20,000 for illegal transportation. If he is unable to pay the fine, he will alternatively be required to spend two weeks in prison. The magistrate then placed Lowe on $1 million bail on the causing death charge and adjourned the matter to October 19.
