Couple on abusive language, assault charges

A man was yesterday fined $10,000 after he admitted to using abusive language to a woman.

However, while he was willing to admit using abusive language to Francina Chase, Kevin Smith denied charges that he damaged the windscreen of her car and assaulted both her and another woman, Tomika Thomas.

City magistrate Faith McGusty heard that on November 29th, Smith, 20, of 26 Peters Hall, allegedly assaulted Chase and Thomas at North Road, Georgetown.

Smith pleaded not guilty to the assault on the two women and the damage he allegedly had done to Chase’s car, which was estimated at $60,000.

In pleading guilty to the abusive language charge, he said there was an exchange of words and both he and Chase used abusive language.

As a result, Smith was fined $10,000. He was granted a sum of $50,000 bail for the assault charges and the damage to property charge. He is expected to be back in court on January 11th for statements on those charges.

Meanwhile, Chase, 25, of 354 North Road and Wellington Street, was also charged. It was alleged that on November 29th, she assaulted and used abusive language to Smith. Chase, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was granted $20,000 bail. She too was ordered to return to court on January 11th, 2016, by Magistrate McGusty.
