Where else could this totally bizarre situation take place?

Dear Editor,

Years ago we were told that shame is worse than death; certainly the old folks did not or could not have catered for events at City Hall, where this government is supporting a brazen shameless assault on decency, justice and good order being executed daily by their implant Town Clerk (ag) Ms Carol Sooba.

At the Monday January 26, 2015 Statutory Meeting, we again witnessed a tirade of obscenities by Ms Sooba hurled at some councillors whose only crime was to seek information on municipal matters. Councillors objected to her subterfuge and disregard for the decisions of the full council by inserting under the ‘action taken’ column: “The Administration noted the decision of Council, or the vague statement that the matter was referred to an appropriate officer.” This meant no action taken, so we have the awful mess in our city, a mismanaged place over the years.

Here are only three examples for citizens to get a glimpse of the unbelievable:

  1. Without consultation, a purported new public address system for use in the chamber was bought by Ms Sooba. It is malfunctioning, we asked for some explanation two weeks ago. There was no response when pressed for an answer; we were greeted with the shouting of Ms Sooba. This is a public official, believe it or not.
  2. Weeks have elapsed and the Town Clerk (ag) cannot give the formula used for deducting monies from the already meagre stipend of councillors who dare speak up.
  3. The matter of non-payment to a clerk properly recruited, who filled a vacancy in the mayoral complex, and with a letter of appointment dated July 2014, was brought to the attention of Minister Whittaker. He advised that we reconfirm the decision of the statutory meeting held months ago to employ the young lady. Even though we felt this was unnecessary, nevertheless we did so, recording yet another confirmation to validate the employment of the young lady. When asked at the statutory meeting why the young lady has not been paid for six months, Ms Sooba made some totally irrelevant statement, and when pressed she said the young lady will be paid but refused to say when. Ms Sooba quipped: she is not sure – believe it or not.

To all rational citizens, where else could this totally bizarre situation take place? Once again has the government stooped so low to support and sanction such inhumane cruelty? Not to mention madness. No shred of compassion, no decency, no justice, but Ms Sooba is a sample of what this government is all about. But as this injustice is meted out to a young Guyanese woman, where are Bishop Juan Edghill, Rev Kwame Gilbert, Gillian Burton, Gail Teixeira, WPO, et al; their silence is sickening.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green
Mayor
