Parliament should be dissolved now

Dear Editor,

The Independent Party (IP) joins the Guyana Bar Association’s (GBA) call for the immediate dissolution of parliament. The president must accept that his prorogation has failed and it is now time to move the country forward.

A date for the upcoming election has been set and parties are in full campaign mode.

As president we expect Mr. Ramotar to respect and abide by the set constitution he swore to uphold. At present, the dissolution of parliament should have occurred on or before February 10th, 2015, three months exactly before the May 11th, 2015 General and Regional Elections without violating the constitution.

The president and ruling party should refrain from stalling tactics and political gimmicks serving their interest and do what is in the best interest of all Guyanese and not a select few.

Yours faithfully,
Mark A. Benschop
