The reader owns a poem as much as the writer

Dear Editor,

I very much enjoyed reading Mr Moore’s letter about poetry (‘Too much emphasis on trying to find out what a poem means,’ Sunday Stabroek, March 1).

When people asked Martin Carter what a poem of his meant, he would often reply very seriously “But I have to ask what does the poem mean to you – because what a poem means to its readers is as important as what it means to the writer. You own it as much as I do.”

Yours faithfully,

Ian McDonald
