A few weeks ago I was stopped on what is commonly called Public Road Kitty by an officer of the Guyana Police Force, and advised that I was over the speed limit. He claimed that I was travelling at 62 kph in a 50 kph zone; in my opinion, I was not.
The following day I drove down the East Coast highway from Turkeyen to Camp Street, for the sole purpose of locating the speed limit signs. There is an 80 kph sign just east of Conversation Tree road, and the next sign, a 50 kph sign is located just west of the junction with Vlissingen Road, directly in front of the GDF base at Camp Ayanganna.
Based on these two signs, the speed limit between those two points should be 80 kph, so that the officer was either incorrect, or a sign is missing.
I’d like the relevant authorities to look into this, and either replace the missing sign, or, instruct the Guyana Police Force to desist from ticketing motorists who are in fact driving within the prescribed speed limits, as I was.
