Government is denying freedom of expression to Region 10 by not adhering to agreement on TV station

Dear Editor

From my standpoint, freedom of expression, in its varied forms, allows us to tap into our inner being, to express ourselves and realize our true potential. Without free expression we cannot transcend the boundary of culture. Without freedom of expression a country has no future. If you cannot express yourself you lose your ability to be you, to be unique, to be universal, to be what God created you to be.

The ability for one, no matter who, to express himself, his creativity, is the only way Guyana can progress. It is the only way every Guyanese can realize their individuality and self-worth. As a nation we need to benefit from the intellect, the ability, the interpretation and understanding of every man, woman and child in order for us to progress, because without free expression there is no conflict, so there can be no resolution. Resolution creates growth, creates progress.

For example the USA presents that freedom of space, that freedom of expression which correspondingly allows for the spawning of development. Even those who disagree, have the space and opportunity for free expression. That freedom of expression allows everyone to share and receive information and ideas. Guyanese too are capable of reaching their full potential if a similar environment were to be created at home.

In 2012 after weeks of sustained struggle, injuries and the loss of lives, the people of Linden/Region 10 entered into an agreement on the 21st August with central government, with the Regional Democratic Council signing on their behalf. Among the menus agreed was the return of the television channel and equipment to the people, which were gifted by Greens Construction. It was out of recognition that freedom of expression is integral to the Region’s development and a right protected in the Guyana Constitution (Article 146) that the television issue was pursued. For the stated reasons, among others, I shall continue to pursue central government for the implementation of the agreement.

It is unfortunate the current central government leaders think Linden and Region 10 have had their fair share of development when the most basic desire, freedom of expression, is being denied. To refuse to abide by the agreement, because of an ill-advised view that development can happen in a vacuum, without people being allowed their right to free expression, makes no sense. No people will allow a government to continue to undermine their desire for self-worth, peaceful co-existence and development. History has shown the desire for freedom always triumphs. And as happened with emancipation, independence, the toppling of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, and the lifting of restrictions in Cuba-USA relations, so too must freedom reign in Guyana! It is time…

Yours faithfully,

K Sharma Solomon
