Offending cartoon

Dear Editor,

The publication of the apology in the April 28th on-line edition of your newspaper and the withdrawal of the ad showing senior military men in the most unflattering role and linked to contentious events in our history was most welcome. We have come to expect nothing less from a newspaper which has set a high bar for itself in journalistic ethics.

However, I would be less than honest if I did not say to you that I was disappointed not to see this on-line apology appear in your regular edition of the 29th April. I am of the view that you ought to publish this apology in the regular edition of your newspaper as the cartoon constitutes a slur on the reputations of some of our most respected military men. Its withdrawal and the apology must therefore be given as much prominence as the offending cartoon.

Finally, I note in your apology that you have identified the PPP as the agents who submitted the ad as a paid advertisement. We are not surprised. Throughout this campaign that Party has brought our political culture to new lows. It is our opinion that the Guyanese people will punish them condignly on May 11th.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Archer
