Clarence Ellis should be given a posthumous award

Dear Editor,

Among the list of awardees on Independence Day, I would like to request that due consideration be given to Clarence F Ellis for a posthumous award. In his many official capacities Clarence served as Guyana’s representative to the World Bank, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Guyana, and Head of State Planning, just to name a few. Clarence was a dear friend and mentor who fought valiantly against corruption, and against anything and everyone he felt was undermining Guyana’s growth and development. To this end, he has written countless articles against corruption in government. In the final years of his life, restoring decency and fairness in Guyana became his life’s work. In the words of Claude McKay, “Like a man he faced the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!” Clarence was passionately Guyanese with an unwavering sense of ethnic pride. Guyana should honour this man

Yours faithfully,
