We are witnessing the rebirth of Guyana

Dear Editor,

Words cannot adequately express the emotions that I experienced on the 49th Independence Day anniversary celebration. I am a senior citizen, whatever that truly means, so I was privy to observe and participate in a few of these aforementioned activities, but this event was quite unique in many ways.

I shall backtrack a bit to the campaigning before the general elections. I was mesmerised by the crowd response at the rallies I attended. The number of youths and women was astonishing, and the energy on display was as incredible as it was unprecedented. Never in the history of this beautiful country of ours, has a political leader’s call reverberated throughout the length and breadth of Guyana, similar to the David and Moses appeal “Time for change,” with unity as the watchword. Tears came to my eyes on a couple of occasions when I saw Brigadier (rtd) David Granger and Mrs Sandra Granger along with Mr Moses Nagamootoo and Mrs Sita Nagamootoo make their appearance together, and I realized what I had envisaged for so many years had happened.

I knew that this spirit existed wherever Guyanese congregate, that hope had returned and what we were witnessing was the rebirth of Guyana.

Editor, I have always held the view that youths and women hold the key to victory in general elections, especially within the last two decades. I knew that once the cavalier and more often than not, recalcitrant attitude of the young people in our midst was addressed, a better Guyana was without any doubt attainable. On the campaign trail all of this was quite evident. The female politicians, namely Cathy Hughes, Simona Broomes and my favourite, Vanessa Kissoon, carried the day for the APNU+AFC but the surprise package, so to speak, was Guyana’s best kept secret until she emerged on the podium, and with her obvious charm captivated all and sundry. I am speaking of none other than Mrs Sandra Granger. I must also compliment Mrs Sita Nagamootoo on her contributions also, always remembering that public speaking especially on political platforms can be a harrowing experience. Congratulations to President Granger, Prime Minister Nagamootoo and the APNU+AFC victory at the recent polls.

Time to heal, time for change.

Yours faithfully,
Lloyd W Davidson
