Appeal should be heard quickly

Dear Editor,

My husband Robert Gates, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for contractual breaches. The maximum allowable sentence is 3 years for these charges. Also I know that a prison year in Guyana is 8 months. In 2010 he was remanded for 10 months awaiting trial, for which he would be given credit as time served. He now has been in prison since January 2014. His release should have been in April of this year; he has an appeal pending but that could take up to 5 years. His lawyer has tried to file motions but the Chief Justice said he can’t interfere because of the appeal that is pending. His appeal needs to be heard at the Court of Appeal as quickly as possible. His sentence has been served and it’s time for him to be freed.

Yours faithfully,
Julie Gates
