Lunar eclipse Sunday

Dear Editor,

There will be a lunar eclipse on Sunday evening, September 27, 2015.

The times displayed are accurate to within two minutes in Guyana
20150925lunar

With good weather the entire eclipse is visible from 9.07 pm to 12.27 am.

The Moon will be at its nearest for the year so it will appear at its largest. This is commonly called a ‘supermoon’. The next supermoon will be the full moon of November 2016, but that will not be in eclipse.

The nearer it is to the Earth, the greater the effect of its gravity, so expect very high spring tides, especially as it is over our latitudes at this time.

The next eclipse visible here will be a partial eclipse of the Sun on August 21, 2017. The next total eclipse of the Moon visible here will be 2019 Jan 20-21, but it will be in the middle of the night in the rainy season.

Yours faithfully,

Alfred Bhulai
