We should not lose sight of the reason for the season

Dear Editor,

I wish to take this opportunity to extend season’s greetings to all Guyanese.

Christmas is indeed a special time of the year which all Guyanese, regardless of ethnicity or religion look forward to and celebrate. This is a time of the year when Guyanese extend their hand of friendship and compassion to the needy and the less fortunate and also exchange gifts and pleasantries with cherished ones. As we celebrate the festive season of Christmas let us not lose sight of the reason for the season and the lessons of Jesus Christ which are fundamentally those of humility and concern for the poor and destitute in our midst.

Regrettably, Christmas is today highly commercialised and too many people fall prey to consumerism and unnecessary spending.

This tendency to spend, sometimes beyond one’s means, is alien to the spirit of the season and only serves to satisfy our own vanity.

A Merry Christmas to all!

Yours faithfully,

Hydar Ally
