An assessment team from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) including persons from Eastern and Southern Caribbean, and Washington D.C. met with the Attorney General, Basil Williams last Friday to examine the possibility of a democracy in governance programme in Guyana, a release from the AG’s Chambers said.The team which comprised of Sue Nelson, Dr. Stacy Ann Wilson, Lawrence Lachmansingh, Chloe Noble and Aaron Aabbarno discussed an array of issues with the Attorney General regarding the administration of justice in Guyana.The issues included Law Revision and a Law Reform Commission; the backlog of criminal cases and its effect on persons held on remand; the implementation of the Civil Proceedings Rules; Constitutional Reform; the need for more experienced draftspersons and attorneys in the Attorney General’s Chambers and the training of Judges, Magistrates and other Judicial Officers.The release said that the USAID assessment team promised to look into the possibility of providing aid to the Judicial Sector in Guyana.
