Hercules is new president of GABA

Guyana Amateur Basketball Coaching Association (GABCA) president Junior Hercules was elected president of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) at yesterday’s Annual General Meeting and election of office bearers at Duke Lodge, Kingston.

Under the watchful eye of Returning Officer Cecil Chin and utilizing an open ballot voting process, Hercules who was nominated by Knights and seconded by Colts basketball clubs, was elected unopposed, receiving eight votes.

Exercising their franchise during the elections were Colts, Republic Bank Nets, Eagles, UG Trojans, Plaisance Guardians, Knights and Melanie Patriots. The clubs that did not vote were Dynas Ravens, TGH Pacesetters and Pepsi Sonics.

Hercules, who is also Plaisance Guardians Basketball Club president, during a brief address after his election said: “On behalf of the team, we would like to thank Michael Singh for pushing basketball over the last two years especially with respect to Georgetown basketball.”

He said the immediate focus of his executive will be on the development of the game through a collective approach, noting that they will attempt to build on what was accomplished by the previous administration.

According to the new president, the building of a positive image and reputation of the sport is critical.

Asked if his appointment will be a conflict of interest due his post as GABCA President, he said:” I don’t believe it will. He noted that the agenda of both is geared towards the same avenue which is the development of the sport of which coaches play an important role.

Former president Singh welcomed the new executive noting:” I am not out of basketball.”

He said that systems will be put in place to ensure a smooth transition from the previous executive to the newly elected administration. Singh, a Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Vice-President, said the new executive will have full cooperation of the GABF while urging them to work hard in their aim to keep GABA the most vibrant association.

Adrian Hooper was elected vice president defeating Ewart Williams by a 6-3 score line while Cheryl Thomas was elected to the post of Secretary after defeating Nadine Luthers-Williams 6-3.

Joyce Sullivan was elected the entity’s Treasurer unchallenged, recording eight votes in the process whilst Luthers-Williams was chosen unobstructed to the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer position with nine votes.
