Atwell arrives, immediately opens training camp

Clive Atwell stepped off the plane and headed straight to the gym yesterday.

Determined to snap his two-fight losing streak, the Dominica based Atwell returned to his old stomping ground focused on regaining his winning punch.

Under the watchful eye of legendary trainer, Lennox Daniels, Atwell opened his training camp at the Andrew ‘SixHead’ Lewis gym for a potential career altering fight against Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings for a light welterweight title (TBA).

Atwell is scheduled to face Mullings 17(12)-1-0 on February 21 in the headline bout of the ‘Caribbean Collision’ card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

‘The Punisher’ 12(7)-2-1 revealed that a victory is of ‘utmost importance’ and he is hungry to add another ‘W’ to his record come fight night. A loss could perhaps end his brief professional career.

“I’m not a person that likes to fail,” the former WBC CABOFE light welterweight champion stated yesterday.

“I like to give everything that I have and this win will be of utmost importance, I once made a promise to myself that three losses would be the end of Clive Atwell and fighting. I think I still have a lot more in me so this win will be very important so I won’t contradict my own words.”

Atwell, who fought for the WBC world featherweight title in Mexico last May, is not concerned about fighting the much bigger Mullings who holds the WBC CABOFE welterweight title.

“Boxing is all about heart and has a lot to do with brains and technical work.

“Yes he is a bigger opponent, but a fighter like me will use my brains so I am not too concerned about that part, I have fought with sparring partners three divisions higher so I won’t be off my game,” he added.

Atwell, 25, has never lost a fight as a pro on local soil and plans on keeping it that way. Confidence is one of the keys to victory.

“Confidence is built in preparation that is why when I hit the gym and workout I give it my all, the work we put it builds the confidence, so as the weeks go by, the confidence will be there and we will be ready to win.”

So what can fans expect from ‘The Punisher’ in a little over three weeks?

“I came with a desire to work and show people that Clive Atwell is still Clive Atwell. My mind is clicking the way it should, they can expect to see speed and craft to the best of my ability.”

If the Atwell fans know shows up, the man from the Land of Wood and Water who has won his last 13 fights, eight within the distance could be in for a long night.

 Undercard

The main supporting bout will feature a rematch involving Mark Austin and Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves. Their welterweight event is scheduled for eight rounds.

In another rematch, CABOFE middleweight champion Edmond DeClou will square off against national super middleweight title holder, Derrick Richmond in an eight-round middleweight contest. The season premier also features debutants Travis Fraser and Charwyn Estwick matching gloves in a four-round light middleweight contest.
