Yaw, Thomas, Hooper and Foster outstanding at AAG Development Meet

The 2015 track and field season got underway yesterday with the staging of the first Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) Development Meet held at the Guyana Defence Force ground.

They were some scintillating performances, which captured the hearts of the sprinkling of patrons.

National athletes Jason Yaw, Cleveland Thomas, Natrena Hooper, Andrea Foster along with Ron Woseley and Brian Roman were some of the competitors that provided the highlights.

Here is a summary of them.

 

2000m

Foster and Thomas, both of the Running Brave Athletic Club, kicked things off by winning their respective 2000m events.

Foster easily won the female open fixture in seven minutes and 12 seconds while Thomas soloed across the line, besting a field of seven other athletes in six minutes and three seconds.

80m, 150m, 300m and 600m

Yaw, a front runner for Junior Sportsman of the year the heat up the damp track in the 80m open event. Blasting out of the blocks and powering through to the finish in 8.7 seconds ahead of Quacy Clementson (8.8) and Morris Gibson (9.0s).

The 6-foot, three-inch quarter-mile phenom then returned to win the open 600m in one minute, 29 seconds, besting podium mates, Thomas and Patrick King.

Hooper also showed fine form in the 80m and 300m events. She dispatched Tiranna Mitchell to win the shorter event and dipped in a close 300 to pip her younger sister Natricia.

Woseley (under-14) of Mercury Fast Laners and Roman (under-16) of Enmore Track and Field Club were in sublime form in their respective 80m and 150m events, easily outsprinting their rivals by as much as 10 metres.

In arguably the most hyped event of the programme, Akeem Stewart (35.3s) squeezed past King (35.4s) and Rupert Perry (35.7s) to run away with the spoils of the open 300m

The next meet on the 2015 track and field calendar will be a Cross Country event on Sunday in Linden.
