B/dos Pride crush Leewards inside three days

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados Pride crushed hapless Leeward Islands Hurricanes by an innings and 190 runs inside three days here yesterday, to make a strong surge in the WICB Professional Cricket League standings.

Using their varied pace and spin attack, the hosts bundled out Hurricanes for 136 in their first innings nearly 50 minutes before lunch and after enforcing the follow-on, sent them crashing for a paltry 80 in their second innings, to wrap up victory on the stroke of tea.

With the success, Pride moved up to 60 points and could assume second place in the standings after the current fifth round of matches, if Jamaica Franchise lose to leaders Guyana Jaguars in Kingston.

Resuming the third day on 84 for five in reply to Pride’s massive 406 for six declared, Hurricanes folded meekly as seamer Carlos Brathwaite and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican ran through the innings, claiming the last five wickets for 52 runs.

Right-armer Brathwaite finished with four for 18 while Warrican took four for 33. Fast bowler Tino Best picked up two for 35.

Only wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton showed any resistance, carving out a top score of 66 to register his ninth first class half-century.

Resuming the day on 30, he stroked 12 fours off 85 balls in two hours at the crease, to be the only bright spark for the luckless visitors.

He extended his sixth wicket stand with Akeem Saunders (16) to 60 before the partnership was broken, when Warrican had Saunders caught at mid-on by Best, driving.

This led to a slump where the last four wickets fell for just 26 runs, with Hamilton the last to go, caught and bowled by Brathwaite.

Following on by 270 runs, Hurricanes fared little better the second time around, slumping to 23 for two at lunch.
