Defending champs begin title defence today

Defending champs Dynas Ravens will begin their title defence today when they oppose Smithfield Rockers in the second annual Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca’ National Club Championship.

Programmed for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue, the titleholders and tourney top seeds will look to make light work of the event’s lowest ranked side at 16th when jump ball occurs at 19:30hrs.

Darcel Harris, coach of the defending champions during an invited comment said: “We had a fairly good practice, it is a team from Berbice so we are just guarding against complacency. We have already covered all the areas that we had weakness and we are hoping to execute well on game night.

“We had some defensive strategies that we worked on going into the game. So we are hoping to work on that because that will be a bigger stepping stone for us in order to progress far in the championship,” he added.

The feature contest of the night will be a Georgetown versus Linden affair when ninth ranked Republic Bank Nets lock horns with the eighth seeded Victory Valley Royals of the mining town at 21:30hrs.

Winners of the tourney will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy while second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $200 000, $150 000 and $75 000 correspondingly.

The tourney will also be used as part of the selection process for the upcoming international series against Bermuda slated to be hosted in the month of March.
