Permaul, George voted NSC Sportsman, Sportswoman-of-the-Year

National cricketer Veerasammy Permaul and track and field star Cassie George were voted the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) Sportsman and Sportswoman-of-the-Year (2014) when the selection panel met yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

However, the discipline of rugby will hog the spotlight come award day after tackling the competition to win five awards. The Guyana Rugby Football Union snared the Sports Team and Association awards and most improved association.

Theo Henry who coached the 7s and 15s squad to the NACRA championships last year, won the coach of the year honours while Peter Green, the straw that stirs the drink for the union was voted as the male sports official of 2014.

Vidushi Persaud from the Guyana Sports Shooting Federation copped the female Sports Personality award.

Stabroek News’ Emmerson Campbell (print) and Orlando Charles (photographer) along with Guyana Times/TVG Avenash Ramzan (non-print) were also winners in their respective categories.

Motor racer, Kristian Jeffrey and track and field ace, Alisha Fortune were adjudged the runners up sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively.

Sprint sensation, Jason Yaw and George were voted Junior Sportsman and woman of the year.

The award ceremony will be held sometime next month at the National Cultural Centre.
