Kitty Weavers in shock defeat of Leopold Street

 

Kitty Weavers registered an unlikely upset defeating Leopold Street by a 3-2 score line when the group stage in the inaugural Guyana Beverage Company Busta Football tourney continued on Tuesday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

Sherwin Vincent gave the Kitty unit the early lead in the fifth minute in front of a small crowd, turning and finishing his left-footed effort down the centre of the goal, from within the middle of the penalty box.

Leopold would then level the score line one minute later as Andre Sookhoo netted, lobbing his right-footed effort over the onrushing keeper into the centre of the goal, following a one-on-one situation.

Kitty would then re-establish their advantage in the 10th minute compliments of a Wendell St. Hill header into the goal, after an initial left sided cross found him unchallenged within the centre of the box.

Hero of the first half, Sookhoo would eventually the level scores once more in the 20th minute with a well-placed strike into the top left corner, from the right side of the field.

However, the shock result would be sealed in the 30th minute as Jermin Denard netted, lashing his effort off the body of an opposing defender and into the lower left hand corner from the centre of the field.

Similarly claiming a hard-fought win was Ballers FC who defeated Sophia by a 2-1 margin. Amos Ramsay gave Ballers the early lead in the fourth minute through a well-placed effort into the right hand side.

Dwayne Lowe would then level the showdown in the 16th minute with a lobbed first time shot into the net, after receiving a lobbed pass from the left side of the field.

Nonetheless, Ramsay would find the go-ahead winner for Ballers in the six minutes before the conclusion of the 30 minute encounter, slotting home from within the centre of the box after receiving a left sided pass.

Additionally claiming a win was Sparta Boss who squeaked past Charlestown by a 3-2 score line. Clyde Bascom opened the scoring for Charlestown in the fifth minute with a turn and strike into the lower left hand.

However Dennis Edwards would then level the score line for Sparta Boss in the 14th minute, re-directing an initial Devon Millington strike from the centre of the park, into the lower left hand corner of the net.

Bascom would then push Charlestown back into the lead in the 17th minute compliments of strike into the left hand corner from within the left side of the penalty area.

The back and forth nature of the contest would continue as Sheldon Shepherd scored for Sparta Boss one minute onward, finishing into the lower right hand corner from within the left side of the box following a solo run from the half way mark.

In other results, Queen Street Tiger Bay defeated Stevedore Housing Scheme 5-2 compliments of a Deon Alfred hat-trick in the 21st, 22nd and 24th minutes and a Darren Harris double in the 20th and 25th minutes. On target in the loss as Ryan Blackman in the 28th and 29th minutes.

Also claiming a win was North Ruimveldt who defeated West Back Road by a 4-2 score line. Jamal Hamilton led the way with a double in to the sixth and 28th minutes whilst Joshua Browne and Nickosie Barker netted in the 16th and 20th minutes.

Netting in the loss was Jamal Haynes and Phillip Rowley in the 13th and 15th minutes respectively. In the third slated fixture, Alexander Village defeated California Square by a 2-1 margin.

The combination of Dwayne Lynn and Delon Williams scored in the victory in the 19th and 28th minutes correspondingly while Vassel Canzelaar netted in the loss in the 20th minute.

Victors of the tourney will receive the championship trophy and $600,000. Meanwhile the second, third and fourth placed sides will receive $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the respective accolade.

Following the end of the initial group stage, the winner of the group will receive $25,000 while the second, third and fourth finishers within the group will receive $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. The action is slated to continue at the same venue with six matchups.
