Trinity Grid downs Pepsi Sonics

Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters overcame home side Pepsi Sonics 64-54 in a u-23 matchup when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the Hard Court’ Championship continued on Wednesday.

Nathan Saul led the winners with 20 points while Jaleel Duke and Marvin Durant supported with 19 and seven points respectively. Quincy Wright was the top scorer for home side with 16 points while Paul Schultz and Drexel Amsterdam netted 13 points each.

The opening period at the National Gymnasium witnessed the visitors taking the early advantage as they restricted the home side to only eight points while netting 17 points in the process.

Saul was the principal scorer in the period for Pacesetters as he shot his way to five points while Duke and Quincy Dos Santos scored four and three points respectively. On the other side, Wright was the top scorer in the period with four points.

The home side would then regroup in the second stanza, outscoring the visitors 15-10 to go into the half time interval trailing 27-23. Amsterdam led the interior assault for Pepsi Sonics as he battled for his seven points through layups while Joshua Lee assisted with three points.

Top scoring for Pacesetters in the period was Duke who netted four points.

The initial stages of the pivotal third period would be all about Saul as he netted the visitors first 10 points in the period to push them ahead.

Saul commenced his assault with a three-pointer at the beginning of the period before netting three layups and a free throw in the four-minute cameo. However the home side would battle back to pull within one at 39-38 through the combination of Schultz and Wright.

Schultz netted 10 points in the period through layups while Wright netted five points. However Duke and Marvin Durant would end the period favourably for the visitors at 47-41 as they combined for four points each. Amsterdam finished the period with four points.

Pacesetters would then build on their lead in the fourth period, sealing the win as they outscored Pepsi Sonics by a 17-13 margin. Duke was the principal scorer in the period with nine points through a three- pointer, a midrange jump shot and two layups.

For Sonic, Schultz led the way with five points inclusive of a three-pointer while Wright and Amsterdam recorded four points each through layups. In the opening matchup of the section, Ravens defeated Plaisance Guardians by a 67-58 score line.

Murtland Ward led all scorers with 20 points in the win while the next best scorer for Ravens was Sebastian Luke with 18 points. Contributing 14 and 10 points in the win was Carlos Edward and Treston Burnette respectively.

Nduka Horatio led the losers with 19 points while Malcolm Ponder, Kelvin Yorrick and Devon Bunbury scored 12, 10 and eighth points respectively. The action is slated to continue today at the same venue.

The opening u-23 fixture of the evening at 18:00hrs will pit Eagles against Colts while Melanie Patriots will oppose Republic Bank Nets from 20:00hrs in the second fixture of the section. In the feature contest at 22:00hrs, the University of Guyana will lock horns with West Side Jammers.
