Mohamed wants to take golf to `higher heights’

Recently reelected president of the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) David Nooranie Mohamad says his executive would be working tirelessly to promote golf in Guyana adding that government assistance would be beneficial.

“During my first term we (the administrators) worked to upgrade the club’s infrastructure, however, this time around, our main objective is to work overtime to promote golf in Guyana,” said Mohamad in an interview with Stabroek Sport.

Mohamad, who on Saturday was reelected unopposed to govern the affairs of the LGC for a second successive term, is optimistic that a collaboration with the government can take golf to higher heights.

“We would seek the courtesy of the new government through the Director of Sport and the Tourism Ministry, to assist the LGC to achieve its goal. In addition, the president is also seeking the government’s cooperation to improve the access road to the facility, since the road is also the pathway to the Lusignan Prison. With their (sport body) assistance, it would make way for local players to compete in regional and international tournaments, and if the Ministry of Tourism support the call the possibility of a bigger Guyana Golf Open tourney exist, which would be ideal for sports tourism”, he said.

“I would also like to see the return of the President’s Cup, which was absent from the calendar last year,” he joked.

He admitted that the task ahead could be challenging but said that he was hopeful his executive crosses those hurdles.

Apart from Mohamad, several of the executive members from the previous year were also returned while there were two new faces. The new executive body comprises; President – David Mohamad; Vice President – Sham Ramroop (newcomer); Secretary – Guy Griffith; Treasurer – Haresh Tewari; Assistant Secretary Treasurer – Dino Bissessar (newcomer); Captain – Chatterpaul Deo; Ground Superintendent – Rabindranath Persaud.
