B/ball team for CARICOM c/ships named

The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has selected the men’s roster for the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in the British Virgin Islands.

The team includes only two overseas-based players in six foot eight inches centre Gordon James and shooting guard Keron Mc Kenzie.

Head-Coach Darcel Harris during an invited comment said “It was a mixture of many things, we looked at fitness, maturity, on court discipline and the ability to adopt to the coaching.”

Akeem Kanhai the six foot guard will lead the 12-member playing roster which will comprise Dave Causeway(guard), Travis Burnett (guard), Shelroy Thomas (guard), Jermaine Slater (forward), Ryan Gullen (forward), Jason Squires (guard), Keron McKenzie (guard), Gordon James (Centre), Rudy James, Chris Williams (guard) and Ryan Stephney (guard).

Marlon Rodrigues will serve as the Assistant Coach and Troy Greene the Manager.

Junior Hercules is the Assistant Manager.

Guyana in their most recent international series, lost 2-1 to CBC rival Suriname in the Dutch nation. Prior to their Suriname tour, Guyana swept another CBC rival in Bermuda 3-0 at home in the month of March.

Guyana will contest group-A of along with Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda. The two top teams in the group will qualify for the championship’s final four section. Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation.

The team is set to depart local shores on Saturday and will open its group campaign on Monday against Antigua and Barbuda.

Practice sessions for the squad are to continue at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall twice daily from 8:00am and 8:00pm. Prior to their departure, the final training session is scheduled for tomorrow at the same locale.
