WICB looking into Deonarine’s desire to play for T/dad in upcoming PCL

Guyana Jaguars batsman Narsingh Deonarine has signaled his intention of representing Trinidad & Tobago for the upcoming Professional Cricket league (PCL) season.

Information reaching Stabroek Sports states that the left-arm batsman had recently indicated to the local Cricket Guyana Incorporated (CGI) franchise that he no longer wanted to play for the Guyana Jaguars but was rather keen on representing the Twin-Island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago for the upcoming season.

Contacted yesterday a CGI official confirmed that Deonarine, who is one of the 10 senior protected players in the Guyana Jaguars camp, had refused a contract after indicating his desire to play for T&T.

Efforts to contact Deonarine yesterday proved futile.

The source also pointed out that the 31-year-old is not a citizen of Trinidad and said it would therefore be interesting to see how the negotiation goes.

The local franchise has already identified and submitted their 10 protected players as well as the additional 15 for the draft a few days ago and the ex-West Indies Under-19 batsman was among those protected players whose name was submitted.

The CGI source however explained that the onus on this decision lies with the executives of the WICB who are apparently looking into the matter. If Deonarine is given approval to represent another territory, it will be a huge loss for the Guyana Jaguars.

Deonarine, who played 31 ODI’s and 18 Tests for the West Indies, was instrumental in the Jaguars winning the 2014/15 PCL four day title after some 17 years while his all-round performances throughout the tournament led to a West Indies recall as well as seeing the batsman finish the Regional season as one of the more prolific run-scorers.
