Cuba beats Guyana 2-0 in Olympic football qualifier

Guyana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil ran into a stumbling block as they lost to Cuba 2-0 in their opening group match of the CFU 2016 Olympic Qualifiers yesterday at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St John’s.

Opting for a 4-4-2 formation, the Golden Jaguars u-23 side starting XI consisted of goalkeeper Anthony Whyte, defenders Daniel Whyte, Joshua Browne, Les Charles Critchlow, William Europe, midfielders Daniel Wilson, Kadell Daniel, Kareem Knights, Trayon Bobb and forwards Pernel Schultz and Delon Lanferman.

In terms of the substitutes, Head Coach Jamal Shabazz had the services of Jason Cromwell (Goalkeeper), Jermaine Junior, Shaquille Agard, Steffon Ramsay, Jamal Harvey, Domini Garnett and Inceforth Charles to call upon.

The first half period saw the Cubans taking the early lead as Frank Manuel Lopez found the back of the net compliments of a seven minute strike. Darian Perez would then complete the eventual score line as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 41st minute.

Guyana will now face off with the host nation on Friday 26th at the same venue from 18:00hrs before ending their campaign two days later against Aruba at the same locale from 15:30hrs.
