Guyana draughts team records first international series triumph

A four-member Draughts swept a two match series against Suriname winning both encounters by 4-0 margins last weekend at the Kweesi School, Nickerie, Suriname.

The two-day Goodwill Series was organized by president of the Guyana Draughts Association, Jiaram Ramdeen and Organiser of District Nickerie Naresh Raghoo.

In the opening encounter played last Friday evening at the Kweesi School in Imeo, Nickerie, Guyana won through Steve Bacchus who defeated Nickerie’s top player P. Mahabier, Mark Brathwaite who defeated R. Harkisoen, Khemraj Pooranmall who defeated S. Oemrowsing and Ramdeen who defeated P. Harkisoen.

Oemrowsing held a piece advantage over Pooranmall but the clever Pooranmall regained the piece and went on to win the game, said team captain Ramdeen.

The second encounter between the two teams was played the following day at the same venue and the Nickerie team was strengthened with the inclusion of O. Julius and Naresh Ragho but the result was the same Guyana winning 4-0.

In the opening game a confident Ramdeen dispatched the crafty Julius while Bacchus defeated S. Oemrowsingh.

In the other two matches Pooranmall defeated Ragho while Brathwaite defeated Mahabier.

It was the Guyana team’s first international draughts series win.

The opening game was recorded live by SBS Television and in an interview with that Station, Ramdeen expressed his gratitude to Ragho for the invitation extended to the Guyana Draughts Association adding that the series strengthened the friendship between the two nations.

Mahabier, in reply, congratulated the Guyana players for their outstanding performance in the opening match.

The GDA said it was grateful to Omadat Samaroo C.E.O Berbice Inc., Bish Panday, Managing Director, P&P Brokers, John Fernandes Ltd., Parmessar Chartered Accountants and Guyoil for sponsorship of the Guyana team’s manager, Balleram Ramdeen.
